Concentrated Perfume Oils (Attars)
NOTE: THESE FRAGRANCES DO NOT CONTAIN ALCOHOL
Concentrated fragrance oils have commonly been known as ATTAR (Arabic); ATR (Persian); or ITTAR (Urdu). Unlike Eau de Toilette or Eau de Parfumes, Attar is typically perfume without alcohol and hence stronger. Also, while in the olden days attars were made up of 100% natural products, todays fragrances tend to be a combination of synthetic and natural ingredients (albeit the latter usually making up a smaller part of the overall formula).
For a long time, fragrances have been categorized as ORIENTALS and OCCIDENTALS. (pls refer to 'Our Categories' menu on the left)
The word Occidental comes from the Latin word "occidens" which means Sunset or West. It is used to denote fragrances that have a Western characteristic to them as opposed to Oriental / Middle Eastern. These fragrances are typically fresh, floral or woody in character.
Oriental fragrances, on the other hand, are heavy fragrance made up of exotic flowers, resins, vanilla and musk. These fragrances are often changed by the addition of varying notes which adds depth to this category, therefore giving us Floral Orientals, Soft Orientals and Woody Orientals.
In the last few years, the latter has become very popular with many Western fragrance houses adopting notes such as Patchouli and Sandalwood to give a more sensual effect to their fragrances.
